Kay and Elsie prepare for their New York dance audition with Eyes the cat. Kay misses a turn. Elsie encourages her to practice together. Kay finds her balance and the girls rehearse with Eyes. Elsie, Kay and Eyes take the New York bus to the audition. The girls meet other dancers in the hallway and feel less nervous. The audition begins. They forget their routine, then invent a song together. Elsie and Kay sing and dance their new song in harmony. The judges and dancers cheer their performance. Eyes cheers too. Six friends celebrate their acceptance in Central Park and form Kitty Kat Cruising. Chapter 2: After a summer performing together, Kay and Elsie start at the bustling conservatory and discover Chapel practicing alone. Elsie and Kay introduce themselves to Chapel. She insists nothing is wrong. A teacher sends them to first period, and they leave in different directions. Kay and Elsie begin hip-hop fusion class, exploring ballet, modern dance, Alvin Ailey-inspired expression and hip-hop rhythm. Tired after class, Kay and Elsie receive encouragement to keep practicing. At outdoor lunch overlooking Central Park, new friends welcome them to their table. Kay and Elsie meet Theo the musician, Mina the artist and Leo the actor. Together they brainstorm a show about finding friends in the city. The bell rings and they rush to class, promising to meet tomorrow. After lunch, Eyes explores the lunchroom, prop storage, backstage passage and music nook before meeting a fluffy white puppy. Eyes meets Crescent, a fluffy white puppy who loves licking people. Eyes asks for classroom 30 T. Crescent says, Sure, follow me, and they walk together. In the library, the friends brainstorm a song. They tell Kay and Elsie that Chapel is famous and studies constantly to join New York City Ballet. Kay asks if Chapel has friends. They do not know. At Halila’s home, Kay admires a lavender dress sketch. The four friends excitedly decide to make costumes together and create a ballet-themed group. The friends plan costumes and music for their ballet show, briefly discuss inviting Chapel, then leave for dinner with homework and creative plans. After school, Crescent shows Eyes the theater, a favorite window and his cozy room, where everyone at school cares for him. They become friends, then Eyes heads home for dinner. The six girls share a happy group phone call after dinner, each in her own bedroom, remembering their first day. One silent montage shows all ten children in their own bedrooms: Kay, Elsie with her hamster, the four dance friends, Theo, Halila, Leo and Chapel. Close-ups of six beloved stuffed animals, including a slightly larger fuzzy cream bunny, and matching tiny replicas on the model opera house stage. Chapel studies alone in her bedroom at night, surrounded by ballet books, medals and shoes, with New York lights outside her window. Crescent gives Eyes a matching Good Girl Belongs Here pillow. They promise to be best friends whom nothing can split apart, then sleep in their separate homes with matching pillows. Kay dreams that Chapel performs with the group and they win a contest. The dream becomes a nightmare: an angry dream version of Chapel pushes Kay off the stage, and Kay falls into darkness. Kay wakes suddenly, realizes the nightmare was only a dream, then sees she is late. She throws on a yellow hoodie, turquoise joggers and mismatched sneakers and rushes out for school. Kay arrives late to assembly. The principal announces Hannah Montana will perform at the school concert. A contest open to everyone, including pets, will choose an act to perform onstage with her. The students cheer.
